Systems Neuroscience

Systems neuroscience is the study of how networks of neurons and interconnected brain regions produce perception, behavior, cognition, and physiological regulation. It examines how electrical and chemical signals move through neural circuits, how synaptic connections integrate information, and how coordinated activity across regions encodes and transforms sensory, motor, and internal-state signals. Researchers combine anatomical analysis with electrophysiology, brain imaging, computational modeling, and targeted circuit manipulation to link neural activity with function. This systems-level approach clarifies how the healthy nervous system operates and helps identify circuit dysfunction associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders, supporting advances in diagnosis, treatment, and brain-inspired technology.

The cognitive neuroscience approach to development focuses on how the central nervous system supports emerging cognitive abilities. Neuroimaging and behavioral studies link specific neural systems to memory and cognitive processing in infancy.Distinct Memory Systems in the Developing BrainInfant long-term memory includes two distinct systems: implicit and explicit memory. Implicit, or nondeclarative, memory involves unconscious recall of skills and routines. It develops early and appears in...
