T-wave Synapt Instrument

The T-wave Synapt instrument is a hybrid mass spectrometry platform that combines ion mobility separation with accurate mass measurement to characterize biological molecules and complexes. It uses a traveling-wave device to propel ions through a gas-filled cell, where differences in collision behavior and mobility separate them before time-of-flight analysis determines their mass-to-charge ratios. In biology, this workflow supports proteomics, peptide and protein identification, and investigation of biomolecular structure, interactions, and conformations. By adding size- and shape-related information to conventional mass spectra, the instrument can resolve complex samples and provide multidimensional data for structural biology and systems-level research.

FM dyes have been of invaluable help in the understanding of synaptic dynamics. FMs are normally followed under the fluorescent microscope during different stimulation conditions. However, photoconversion of FM dyes combined with electron microscopy allows the visualization of distinct synaptic vesicle pools, among other ultrastructure components, in synaptic boutons.

Sound Waves and Doppler Shift

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Standing waves, or stationary waves, are waves that appear not to propagate and are produced by the interference of two waves traveling in opposite directions with the same frequency and amplitude. These waves appear to vibrate up and down with no linear movement and are most easily identified in vibrating finite media like a plucked guitar string,...

Effective research relies on specialized instruments that help collect and analyze data precisely. These tools, which include surveys, interviews, observation checklists, focus groups, and mechanical devices, are each designed to capture specific types of information crucial for informed decision-making. Surveys, for instance, are commonly used to gather broad insights from large populations, such as determining public opinion on educational policies. Interviews, on the other hand, play a...

Automated Quantification of Synaptic Fluorescence in C. elegans

The abundance of neurotransmitter receptors clustered at synapses strongly influences synaptic strength. This method quantifies fluorescently-labeled neurotransmitter receptors in three dimensions with single-synapse resolution in C. elegans, allowing hundreds of synapses to be rapidly characterized within a single sample without distortions introduced by z-plane projection.
