Temperature Effects

Temperature effects describe how changes in thermal conditions alter the structure, activity, and survival of biological systems. In biology, temperature influences reaction rates by changing molecular motion and enzyme-catalyzed processes, while also affecting membrane fluidity, protein stability, and metabolic regulation; temperatures beyond an organism’s tolerance can disrupt cellular function. Studying these effects helps explain how organisms grow, reproduce, and maintain homeostasis across environments. Temperature-response measurements are applied in ecology, physiology, microbiology, agriculture, and conservation to predict stress responses, define optimal growth conditions, and assess how climate variation may affect populations and ecosystems.

Effects of Temperature on Free Energy

The spontaneity of a process depends upon the temperature of the system. Phase transitions, for example, will proceed spontaneously in one direction or the other depending upon the temperature of the substance in question. Likewise, some chemical reactions can also exhibit temperature-dependent spontaneities. To illustrate this concept, the equation relating free energy change to the enthalpy and entropy changes for the process is considered: The spontaneity of a process, as reflected in the...

Atomic Spectroscopy: Effects of Temperature

Atomization, converting samples into gas-phase atoms and ions, is essential for atomic spectroscopy. The flame temperature required for atomization affects the efficiency of the atomic spectroscopic methods by increasing the atomization efficiency and the relative population of the excited and ground states. At thermal equilibrium, the relative populations of excited and ground state atoms can be estimated using the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. For example, an increase in temperature from...

Chemical Kinetics The reaction rate is the speed at which a chemical reaction occurs. The reaction rate is defined as the change in concentration of a component in the reaction with time. The speed of a reaction depends on several factors, including the concentration of reactants and the temperature at which the reaction is performed. Each reactant contributes to the speed of the reaction by a specific factor. This relationship is defined by the reaction rate law. Rate Law The rate law is an...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Temperature Dependent Decomposition of Hydrogen PeroxideExpand We suggest that students work in pairs for this experiment. Equipment controls may vary. In this lab, you'll perform a decomposition reaction where a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products. You will observe the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. This decomposition happens very slowly, so you will use iron (III) nitrate as a...

Temperature control during liquid-phase electron microscopy experiments opens up new perspectives of studying the dynamic of nanoparticles in liquid environments mimicking their formation or application media. Using recently developed heating liquid cells, we directly observed the influence of temperature on the nucleation and growth processes of gold nanoparticles in water.
