Heart Development

Heart development is the biological process through which embryonic cells form and organize the heart, establishing the structure required for lifelong circulation. It begins when mesodermal progenitor cells become cardiac cells, assemble into a primitive heart tube, and undergo looping, chamber formation, septation, and valve development under coordinated genetic and molecular signals. Studying these stages explains how the heart acquires its specialized tissues and functional architecture. In biology and biomedical research, developmental models help identify the origins of congenital heart defects, evaluate the effects of genetic or environmental factors, and guide efforts to generate cardiac cells for disease modeling and regenerative medicine.

Development of the Heart

The development of the human heart, a crucial organ, commences from the mesoderm on the 18th or 19th day after fertilization. This process initiates in the cardiogenic area, a group of mesodermal cells at the embryo's head end, which evolves into elongated strands known as cardiogenic cords. These cords undergo a transformation to form hollow-centered endocardial tubes. As the embryo undergoes lateral folding, these paired tubes approach each other, merging into a single primitive heart tube by...

Mutations that lead to congenital heart defects benefit from in vivo investigation of cardiac structure during development, but high-resolution structural studies in the mouse embryonic heart are technically challenging. Here we present a robust immunofluorescence and image analysis method to assess cardiomyocyte-specific structures in the developing mouse heart.
