Thermocouple Measurement

Thermocouple measurement is a method for determining temperature from the voltage produced by joining two dissimilar metals, making it useful for monitoring biological systems and laboratory conditions. When the measurement junction and reference junction experience different temperatures, the Seebeck effect generates a small thermoelectric voltage that instruments convert to temperature through calibration or a standard reference. In biology, thermocouples help track temperatures in incubators, water baths, thermal cyclers, and experimental environments, supporting consistent cell culture, enzyme reactions, and physiological studies. Their small size and rapid response also enable localized measurements where larger sensors may disturb the sample or surrounding system.

A Simple Dewar/Cryostat for Thermally Equilibrating Samples at Known Temperatures for Accurate Cryogenic Luminescence Measurements

2016

A simple liquid nitrogen Dewar/cryostat apparatus comprised of a small fused silica optical Dewar, a thermocouple, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) spectrograph are described. The experiments for which this Dewar/cryostat is designed require fast sample loading, freezing, and alignment, accurate and stable sample temperatures, and small size/portability.

Ultrasound velocimetry is used to study mixing by fluid flow in liquid metal electrodes. The focus of this manuscript is to illustrate the methods used for making precise, spatially-resolved ultrasound measurements while limiting oxidation and controlling and monitoring temperature, applied current, and the heater power being supplied.

Surface Renewal: An Advanced Micrometeorological Method for Measuring and Processing Field-Scale Energy Flux Density Data

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.
