Thorax Dissection

Thorax dissection is an anatomical technique used to examine the structures within the chest cavity, making the organization of respiratory and circulatory systems visible. During the procedure, tissues are opened layer by layer to expose the ribs, pleural membranes, lungs, heart, major blood vessels, and their spatial relationships. This approach shows how thoracic organs are protected, positioned, and connected, while linking observed structures to breathing and circulation. In biology education and research, thorax dissection supports comparative anatomy, practical identification, and investigation of organ structure, while developing careful specimen handling and observation skills.

Veins of Thorax

The azygos system is a crucial part of the body's circulatory system and drains most of the thorax. It comprises the azygos, hemiazygos, and accessory hemiazygos veins. The azygos vein, positioned just right of the midline and anterior to the vertebral column, begins at the junction of the right ascending lumbar and subcostal veins, terminating in the superior vena cava. This vein drains blood from the right side of the thoracic wall, thoracic viscera, and posterior abdominal wall. The...

The thorax muscles are central to the body's respiration and provide essential support and movement for the upper body. They are intricately designed to facilitate the complex breathing process while also contributing to the structural integrity and mobility of the chest and upper limbs. The diaphragm is at the core of thoracic musculature, the primary muscle involved in breathing. This expansive, dome-shaped muscle marks the division between the thoracic and abdominal cavities. It originates...

In insects, the oenocytes produce cuticular hydrocarbon compounds. These compounds protect against desiccation and facilitate chemical communication. Here we demonstrate a dissection technique used to isolate the oenocytes from adult Drosophila melanogaster, and illustrate how this preparation can be utilized to study genes involved in hydrocarbon synthesis.

Dissection of Drosophila melanogaster Indirect Flight Muscles for Microscopy Approaches

2025

Drosophila is a powerful model to understand fundamental mechanisms of myogenesis. This protocol for the dissection and preparation of thorax hemi-sections enables microscopy analysis of indirect flight muscle from both pupal and adult stages. This protocol enables confocal imaging of cellular morphology, protein localization, muscle structure, and multiple other aspects of myogenesis.
