Tibial Immobilization Probe

A tibial immobilization probe is a specialized biological research tool used to stabilize the tibia, the lower-leg bone, while limiting movement at the associated limb joints. It works by positioning the probe against or around the tibial region to restrict motion under controlled experimental conditions, allowing researchers to distinguish effects caused by immobilization from those produced by normal movement. In biology, this approach supports studies of limb biomechanics, neuromuscular coordination, sensory feedback, and tissue responses to reduced mobility. By providing a consistent method for temporary restraint, the probe can improve experimental control when investigating how movement influences structure and function.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Surgical Angiogenesis in Porcine Tibial Allotransplantation: A New Large Animal Bone Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Model

Currently any kind of vascularized composite allotransplantation depends on long-term-immunosuppression, difficult to support for non-life-critical indications. We present a new porcine tibial VCA model that can be used to study bone VCA and demonstrate the use of surgical angiogenesis to maintain bone viability without the need of long-term immune-modulation.
