Ureterovesical Junction Obstruction

Ureterovesical junction (UVJ) obstruction is a blockage or narrowing where a ureter enters the urinary bladder, a clinically important condition because it can impede urine drainage from the kidney. The obstruction may result from congenital narrowing, abnormal ureteral insertion, swelling, or a physical blockage; restricted flow can increase upstream pressure and produce ureteral dilation (hydroureter) and kidney dilation (hydronephrosis). In biology and medicine, studying UVJ obstruction helps explain urinary tract development, urine transport, and how impaired drainage can contribute to urinary tract infections, pain, or progressive renal injury, while supporting diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning.

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.

A functional assessment of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) can provide essential information on the communication between muscle and nerve. Here we describe a protocol to comprehensively evaluate both the NMJ and muscle functionality using two different muscle-nerve preparations, i.e. soleus-sciatic and diaphragm-phrenic.

A p-n junction is formed when p-type and n-type semiconductor materials are joined together. At the interface of the p-n junction, holes from the p-side and electrons from the n-side begin to diffuse into the opposite sides due to the concentration gradient. This diffusion of carriers leads to a region around the junction where there are no free charge carriers, known as the depletion region. The charge density within the depletion region for the n-side and p-side can be described by the...
