Maxillary Nerve Exposure

Maxillary nerve exposure is a surgical and anatomical technique used to identify and access the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve, or cranial nerve V2, as it passes through the skull and midface. The procedure follows anatomical landmarks such as the foramen rotundum, pterygopalatine fossa, infraorbital fissure, and infraorbital foramen, while careful dissection preserves adjacent vessels and sensory branches. In biology and clinical research, maxillary nerve exposure supports neuroanatomical study, evaluation of facial sensation, surgical planning, and investigation of nerve injury or repair. Understanding this pathway also helps clarify how sensory information from the midface reaches the central nervous system.

The zebrafish maxillary barbel is an integumentary sense organ containing ectodermal, mesodermal and neural crest derivatives. Importantly, the adult barbel can regenerate after proximal amputation. This video introduces maxillary barbel development and demonstrates a surgical protocol to induce regeneration, followed by collection, embedding and downstream imaging of barbel specimens.

Here we demonstrate step-by-step a manageable, orthodontic tooth movement protocol operated on a murine maxillary model. With the explicit explanation of each step and visual demonstration, researchers can master this model and apply it to their experimental needs with a few modifications.

Induction of Neuropathic Pain in a Rat Model by Constriction of the Infraorbital Nerve

Source: Deseure, K., et al. Chronic Constriction Injury of the Rat's Infraorbital Nerve (IoN-CCI) to Study Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates a method to induce neuropathic pain in a rat model by constricting the infraorbital nerve. After exposing the infraorbital nerve and tying ligatures to constrict it, the immune response at the injury site increases the excitability of neighboring neurons, which transmit pain signals to the brain.

Source: Lee, D. et. al., Modified Experimental Conditions for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Mice and Assessment of Hearing Function and Outer Hair Cell Damage. J. Vis. Exp. (2023)This video demonstrates the procedure of noise-induced hearing loss in mice. High-volume sound damages hair cells in the inner ear and disrupts auditory pathways, resulting in hearing impairment.
