Video Playback

Video playback is a research method that presents recorded visual or audiovisual stimuli to an organism to measure behavioral responses under controlled conditions. In biology, researchers manipulate features such as movement, appearance, sound, timing, and repetition while recording responses including orientation, attraction, recognition, or avoidance. By standardizing the stimulus and separating it from the original living signaler, video playback experiments help identify which sensory cues influence behavior and reduce variation between trials. The method supports studies of animal communication, social behavior, predator-prey interactions, mate choice, and cognition, providing a practical way to test how organisms perceive and respond to biologically relevant information.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in mice differ depending on age, sex, condition, and genetic background. Using two ultrasound emitters broadcasting simultaneously in different locations, this two-choice test can evaluate murine recognition and preference responses to different characteristics of USVs.

Video-oculography is a very quantitative method to investigate ocular motor performance as well as motor learning. Here, we describe how to measure video-oculography in mice. Applying this technique on normal, pharmacologically-treated or genetically modified mice is a powerful research tool to explore the underlying physiology of motor behaviors.

The complete construction of a custom, real-time confocal scanning imaging system is described. This system, which can be readily used for video-rate microscopy and microendoscopy, allows for an array of imaging geometries and applications not accessible using standard commercial confocal systems, at a fraction of the cost.
