Cell Segmentation Analysis

Cell segmentation analysis is the process of identifying and outlining individual cells or cellular compartments in microscopy images, enabling quantitative study of cell number, shape, size, and spatial organization. It typically combines image preprocessing with thresholding, feature detection, or machine-learning models that distinguish cell boundaries from surrounding signal and separate adjacent or overlapping cells. In cancer research, segmentation supports measurements of tumor-cell morphology, proliferation, biomarker expression, and interactions within the tumor microenvironment. Reliable segmentation converts complex images into reproducible data, helping researchers compare disease states, evaluate treatment responses, and develop more precise models of cancer biology.

Segmentation of three-dimensional data from many imaging techniques is a major bottleneck in analysis of complex biological systems. Here, we describe the use of SuRVoS Workbench to semi-automatically segment volumetric data at various length-scales using example datasets from cryo-electron tomography, cryo soft X-ray tomography, and phase contrast X-ray tomography techniques.

Somitogenesis is a rhythmic developmental process that spatially patterns the body axis of vertebrate embryos. Previously, we developed transgenic zebrafish lines that use fluorescent reporters to observe the cyclic genes that drive this process. Here, we culture dispersed cells from these lines and image their oscillations over time in vitro.

Continuous 12-lead electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring can identify transient myocardial ischemia, even when asymptomatic, among patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In this article we describe our method for initiating patient monitoring using a Holter device, downloading the ECG data for off-line analysis, and how to utilize the ECG software to identify transient ischemia.
