Analytical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry is the branch of chemistry that identifies substances and measures their amounts, providing reliable evidence about the composition of materials. It combines sample preparation with qualitative and quantitative methods, including spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemical analysis, and calibration against known standards to detect, separate, and quantify chemical components. These approaches support research and quality control across pharmaceuticals, environmental monitoring, clinical testing, food science, and forensic investigations. By linking chemical measurements to validated methods, analytical chemistry helps determine purity, trace contaminants, characterize complex samples, and guide decisions in both laboratory and industrial settings.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...

Fabricating Cotton Analytical Devices

2016

To investigate simple fabrication approaches for multiple assay needs, we created a fluid-absorbing channel system made of cotton material. This device was used to establish a multiple detection platform, and solve contamination issues that commonly affect lateral flow-based biomedical devices, for clinical urinalysis of nitrite, total protein, and urobilinogen.

Chemoselective Modification of Viral Surfaces via Bioorthogonal Click Chemistry

Adenovirus particles are engineered to contain either the unnatural amino acid analogue azidohomoalanine or the azido sugar O-GlcNAz. The azide group of each is chemoselectively ligated via "click" chemistry reactions as a means of viral surface modification.

Structural Biology and Analytical Chemistry Approaches for Characterizing C-Glycoside Metabolic Enzymes in Human Gut Microbiota

Recent studies highlight the roles of human gut microbiota enzymes in metabolizing C-glycosides. Here, we present a comprehensive methodology integrating analytical chemistry techniques (LC-MS/MS and NMR) with structural biology approaches to systematically characterize the structural and enzymatic reaction chains of these C-glycoside-metabolizing enzymes.
