Grating Spectrometer

A grating spectrometer is an optical instrument that separates light into its component wavelengths to measure a spectrum, making it useful for identifying and quantifying chemical substances. It directs light onto a diffraction grating with regularly spaced grooves, which diffracts different wavelengths at distinct angles; a detector then records intensity as a function of wavelength. In chemistry, the resulting spectra can reveal atomic emission lines, molecular absorption bands, and electronic transitions. Calibrated grating spectrometers support elemental analysis, reaction monitoring, materials characterization, and precise measurements of how samples emit, absorb, or transmit light.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

IR Spectrometers

There are two main infrared (IR) spectrophotometers: dispersive IR spectrometers and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. In a dispersive IR spectrometer, a beam of infrared radiation produced by a hot wire is divided into two parallel equal-intensity beams using mirrors. One beam passes through the sample, while another is a reference beam. The beams then move through the monochromator, which separates the radiations into a continuous spectrum of different frequencies. The...

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.

Here we present a protocol to build a rapid Brillouin spectrometer. Cascading virtually imaged phase array (VIPA) etalons achieve a measurement speed more than 1,000 times faster than traditional scanning Fabry-Perot spectrometers. This improvement provides the means for Brillouin analysis of tissue and biomaterials at low power levels in vivo.

This lesson details the instrumentation of a mass spectrometer—a physical instrument to perform mass spectrometry on analyte molecules and record the characteristic mass spectra. This is achieved via three chief functions: Conversion of the gas-phase analyte atoms/molecules into a beam of positive or negative charged ions by ionization. Separation of the charged species based on their mass-to-charge ratio. Recording the relative abundance of each type of ion. In the ionization chamber of...
