Nitric Acid Reaction

Nitric acid reactions are chemical transformations involving HNO3, a strong acid and, especially when concentrated, a powerful oxidizing agent used to modify inorganic and organic substances. In water, nitric acid dissociates into hydronium and nitrate ions, while in redox reactions nitrate accepts electrons and is reduced to nitrogen oxides or other nitrogen-containing products; the outcome depends on concentration, temperature, and the reacting material. These reactions support qualitative analysis, metal dissolution, nitrate preparation, and industrial production of fertilizers and explosives, while also providing important examples of acid–base chemistry, oxidation–reduction, gas evolution, and chemical safety in the laboratory.

An acid-base reaction is one in which a hydrogen ion, H+, is transferred from one chemical species to another. Such reactions are of central importance to numerous natural and technological processes, ranging from the chemical transformations within cells or lakes and oceans to the industrial-scale production of fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and other substances essential to the society. There are several ways of defining an acid. In the context of aqueous solutions, an acid is a substance...

Reactions of Acid Anhydrides

The reactions of acid anhydrides are analogous to the reactions of acid chlorides and proceed via a nucleophilic acyl substitution. They only differ in the identity of the leaving group. During an acid chloride reaction, the leaving group is a chloride ion, and the by-product is hydrochloric acid. However, in an acid anhydride reaction, the leaving group is a carboxylate ion, and the by-product is a carboxylic acid. The reaction of acid anhydrides involves the nucleophilic attack at one...

In this reaction, the solid copper is first oxidized by the strong oxidizing agent, nitric acid, to form water and the salt copper nitrate. The copper nitrate quickly dissociates into the ions, copper(2+) and nitrate, in water. The nitrate anions are reduced to NO2 gas, which is confirmed by the presence of reddish-brown fumes. The presence of copper...

The endogenous production of nitric oxide (NO) regulates a wide variety of biological functions. It is becoming increasingly clear that disruption or dysregulation of NO based signaling is involved in many human diseases. Methods to quantify relevant NO metabolites may provide novel diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for human disease.

Reactions of Carboxylic Acids: Introduction

Carboxylic acids possess an acidic –COOH functional group. The acidity can be attributed to the resonance stabilization of their conjugate base, wherein the negative charge is delocalized over both oxygen atoms. The acyl bond is polar because of the high electronegativity of oxygen, making the carbonyl carbon highly reactive and susceptible to nucleophilic attack. Thus, nucleophilic acyl substitution reactions can convert the –COOH to acid derivatives such as acyl halides, esters, anhydrides,...
