Polyvinyl Chloride

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer valued for its durability, chemical resistance, and versatility in everyday and industrial materials. Chemically, it forms when vinyl chloride monomers undergo addition polymerization, linking carbon-carbon double bonds into long chains with chlorine atoms attached to the backbone; plasticizers, stabilizers, and other additives can modify its flexibility, strength, and processing behavior. Rigid PVC is used in pipes, window frames, and construction products, while flexible PVC appears in cables, flooring, and medical tubing. Studying PVC connects polymer structure and composition to material properties, manufacturing, performance, and environmental considerations.
