Quartz Slide Cleaning

Quartz slide cleaning is the controlled removal of organic residues, dust, salts, and other contaminants from fused-silica surfaces before chemical or analytical work. The process typically combines rinsing, detergent or solvent washing, and, when appropriate, oxidative treatment to break down adsorbed organic films, followed by thorough rinsing and drying; the selected conditions must preserve the quartz surface and avoid recontamination. Clean slides provide more reproducible wetting, optical measurements, surface reactions, and sample preparation in chemistry. Effective cleaning is especially important for spectroscopy, thin-film deposition, microscopy, and experiments in which trace impurities can alter adsorption, reaction behavior, or analytical signals.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Organic synthesis is about transforming a readily available reagent into a more valuable product. Having clean glassware is crucial for the efficiency of this process. Dirty glassware can potentially affect the reaction and make isolation of the final product more challenging. Thus, a synthetic chemist must keep the glassware spotless. The methods described here will detail different glass cleaning...

Keeping the microscope optics clean is important for high-quality imaging. Dust, fingerprints, excess immersion oil, or mounting medium on or in a microscope causes reduction in contrast and resolution. DIC is especially sensitive to contamination and scratches on the lens surfaces. This protocol details the procedure for keeping the microscope clean.

Source: Paolone, G., et al. Personalized Needles for Microinjections in the Rodent Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates a rodent brain microneedle injection using a quartz microneedle with holes. The microneedle is attached to a syringe and micropump to control the delivery rate. The needle with the injection solution is inserted into the brain with the delivery speed set at low. Once positioned, the delivery speed is increased. The needle is withdrawn after a brief pause.

Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization are the methods that help to break the infection chain and prevent disease. Cleaning The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...
