Structural Characterization Methods

Structural characterization methods are analytical techniques used to determine the composition, arrangement, and three-dimensional structure of chemical substances, making them central to identifying and validating molecules and materials. They work by measuring how a sample interacts with energy or particles, such as electromagnetic radiation in infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-rays in crystallography, or ions in mass spectrometry; the resulting signals reveal functional groups, connectivity, atomic positions, and molecular mass. In chemistry, researchers combine complementary methods to confirm reaction products, distinguish isomers, analyze unknown compounds, and relate structure to properties. These approaches support drug development, materials research, catalysis, and quality control.

Biofilms have complex interactions with their surrounding environment. To comprehensively investigate biofilm-environment interactions, we present here a series of methods to create heterogeneous chemical environment for biofilm development, to quantify local flow velocity, and to analyze mass transport in and around biofilm colonies.

Isolating electrical and thermal effects on electrically assisted deformation (EAD) is very difficult using macroscopic samples. Metallic sample micro- and nanostructures together with a custom test procedure have been developed to evaluate the impact of applied current on the formation without joule heating and evolution of dislocations on these samples.

An Immunofluorescent Method for Characterization of Barrett’s Esophagus Cells

2014

There is a discernible need for improved information on molecular drivers of Barrett’s Esophagus. Immunofluorescent staining is a useful technique for understanding the effects of cell signaling on cell morphology. We present a simple, effective protocol for the use of immunofluorescent staining to assess therapeutic treatment in Barrett’s Esophagus cells.
