Linac Coherent Light Source

Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a free-electron laser facility that produces extremely bright, ultrashort X-ray pulses, enabling scientists to observe matter on atomic length and ultrafast time scales. In LCLS, high-energy electron bunches travel through an undulator, where their motion generates coherent X-ray radiation that can be tuned for imaging and spectroscopy. In chemistry, these pulses probe molecular structures, electronic states, and bond rearrangements during photochemical reactions and catalysis. Time-resolved measurements can capture transient intermediates and reaction pathways, helping researchers connect molecular-scale dynamics with chemical function and improve models of energy conversion and materials behavior.

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.
