Diagnostic Validation

Diagnostic validation is the systematic process of establishing that a clinical test reliably measures its intended target and supports its intended use. Validation examines performance by comparing results with reference methods or clinically characterized samples and assessing accuracy, precision, analytical sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility under defined conditions. In clinical laboratories, these studies help determine whether an assay can identify disease, guide treatment, or monitor health while accounting for specimen type, workflow, and potential sources of error. Well-designed diagnostic validation supports assay selection, quality assurance, regulatory review, and safer patient care, while providing evidence for consistent results across instruments, operators, and clinical settings.

Here, we present a protocol for the development and validation of a quantitative PCR method used for the detection and quantification of EHV-2 DNA in equine respiratory fluids. The EHV-2 qRT-PCR validation protocol involves a three-part procedure: development, characterization of qRT-PCR assay alone, and characterization of the whole analytical method.

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways. Unfortunately, being consistent in measurement does not necessarily mean that you have measured something correctly. To illustrate this concept, consider a kitchen...

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) serves as the primary classification system for mental health disorders, providing standardized diagnostic criteria for clinicians and researchers. First published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, the DSM has undergone several revisions to reflect evolving psychiatric understanding. The fifth edition, DSM-5, was published in 2013, followed by its text revision, DSM-5-TR, in 2022. This revision incorporates...
