Imaging Procedures

Imaging procedures are clinical techniques that create visual representations of internal body structures or physiological activity, supporting diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment planning. Depending on the modality, they use ionizing radiation, magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals, sound waves, or injected contrast agents and radioactive tracers to generate images through differences in tissue density, signal behavior, or tracer distribution. Common procedures include radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine studies. By revealing anatomy and function without exploratory surgery, clinical imaging helps identify disease, guide interventions, assess treatment response, and improve patient care while informing decisions about safety, contrast use, and radiation exposure.

2008

This video and protocol demonstrate how to implant a glass-covered cranial window in rodents. These preparations can be used for chronic in vivo two-photon imaging of the neocortex over time scales of months. It may also be used for other types of imaging, including optical intrinsic signal imaging.

Safety Precautions and Operating Procedures in an (A)BSL-4 Laboratory: 4. Medical Imaging Procedures

Here, we present an overview of the preparation and animal handling procedures required to safely perform medical imaging in an animal biosafety level 4 laboratory. Computed tomography of a mock-infected guinea pig illustrates these procedures that may be used to evaluate the disease caused by a high consequence pathogen.

Bioluminescence Imaging of Heme Oxygenase-1 Upregulation in the Gua Sha Procedure

Gua Sha, traditional Chinese therapeutic skin scraping, causes subcutaneous microvascular blood extravasation. We report a protocol of bioluminescence imaging of HO-1-luciferase transgenic mice to demonstrate that Gua Sha upregulates heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in multiple organs.

Making MR Imaging Child's Play - Pediatric Neuroimaging Protocol, Guidelines and Procedure

Despite an increase in the use of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans, the study of young pediatric populations remains a challenge. We present a hands-on, step-by-step video protocol including guidelines for clinicians and researchers intending to perform (f)MRI in young children.

A Large Lateral Craniotomy Procedure for Mesoscale Wide-field Optical Imaging of Brain Activity
