Iodophors

Iodophors are iodine-containing antiseptic and disinfectant formulations in which iodine is complexed with a carrier, such as a surfactant or polymer, to improve handling and provide sustained antimicrobial activity. When diluted or applied, the complex gradually releases free iodine, which penetrates microbial cells and disrupts proteins, membranes, and other essential structures, thereby inactivating a wide range of microorganisms. In clinical practice, iodophors such as povidone-iodine are used for skin antisepsis, wound care, and preparation of procedural sites, helping reduce microbial contamination and infection risk. Their effectiveness depends on formulation, concentration, contact time, and the presence of organic material.
