Lip Examination

Lip examination is a focused clinical assessment of the lips and surrounding tissues used to evaluate color, symmetry, surface changes, movement, sensation, and signs of local or systemic disease. It typically combines visual inspection with palpation, assessing features such as moisture, lesions, swelling, tenderness, texture, and mucosal continuity under adequate lighting. Clinicians may compare both sides and relate findings to symptoms, oral health, trauma, infection, inflammation, vascular changes, or nutritional and systemic conditions. As a rapid, noninvasive component of the physical examination, it supports differential diagnosis, guides further oral or medical evaluation, and helps monitor treatment response.

The technical aspects of performing LIPS (Luciferase Immunoprecipitation Systems) are described. The overall approach involves expressing chimeric genes encoding antigens fused to Renilla luciferase (Ruc) in mammalian cells. Crude Ruc-antigen extracts are then prepared and, without purification, employed in immunoprecipitation assays to quantify antibodies.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA The simplest ophthalmoscopes consist of an aperture to look through, a diopter indicator, and a disc for selecting lenses. The ophthalmoscope is primarily used to examine the fundus, or the inner wall of the posterior eye, which consists of the choroid, retina, fovea, macula, optic disc, and retinal vessels (Figure 1). The spherical eyeball...
