Otoscope Application

Otoscope application is the clinical use of a lighted, magnifying instrument to examine the external ear canal and tympanic membrane, supporting evaluation of ear-related symptoms. During the procedure, a disposable speculum directs illumination into the canal while magnification helps the clinician assess tissue color, integrity, swelling, fluid, cerumen, and visible lesions. In clinical practice, otoscopy contributes to identifying conditions such as otitis externa, otitis media, foreign bodies, and tympanic membrane perforation. Proper patient positioning, gentle insertion, and comparison of both ears improve visualization and help guide diagnosis, treatment decisions, and follow-up care.

We have developed a simple, reliable, and relatively inexpensive method for endotracheal intubation in mice via direct laryngoscopy using an otoscope with a 2.0 mm speculum. This technique is atraumatic and can be used for repeated measurements in chronic experiments. We find it superior to tracheostomy or previously reported nonsurgical techniques.
