Bone Cell Activity

Bone cell activity refers to the coordinated functions of cells that form, maintain, and remodel bone, a dynamic tissue essential for skeletal development and mechanical support. Osteoblasts produce new bone matrix, osteoclasts resorb mineralized tissue, and osteocytes sense mechanical and chemical signals to regulate these processes through cell communication and signaling pathways. During development, the balance between bone formation and resorption shapes skeletal growth, mineralization, and repair. Studying these interactions helps explain how bones develop, adapt to physical demands, and respond to injury or disease, while informing research on skeletal disorders and regenerative strategies.

This video describes the technique of aspirating bone marrow from iliac spine and smear preparation for biopsy. In the example, we perform bone marrow aspiration from an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patient and examine the cells to check for measurable residual disease (MRD), an important prognostic biomarker.
