Nephron Injury

Nephron injury is damage to the kidney’s filtering units, which can disrupt filtration, reabsorption, and the regulation of fluid and solute balance. Injury may affect glomerular or tubular cells and trigger cellular stress, inflammation, and loss of epithelial integrity, reducing nephron function. In developmental biology, studying nephron injury helps clarify how developing kidneys respond to harmful conditions and how disrupted repair influences nephron formation and maturation. These insights support research on congenital kidney disorders, tissue regeneration, and laboratory models used to investigate kidney disease and potential therapeutic strategies.

The kidneys are intricate organs with millions of working units known as nephrons. Each nephron features two major structures: the renal corpuscle, which facilitates blood plasma filtration, and the renal tubule, which handles the glomerular filtrate. Blood supply is directly linked to the nephrons. The renal corpuscle consists of the glomerulus, a capillary network, and the Bowman's capsule, a double-walled epithelial structure that encases the glomerulus. The filtering of blood plasma happens...

The zebrafish adult kidney is an excellent system for renal regeneration and disease studies. An essential aspect of such research is the assessment of nephron structure and function. This protocol describes several methodologies that can be implemented to assess nephron tubule composition and to evaluate renal reabsorption.

Estimation of Nephron Number in Whole Kidney using the Acid Maceration Method

Estimates of whole kidney nephron number are important clinically and experimentally, as there is an inverse association between nephron number and an enhanced risk of renal and cardiovascular disease.Herein, the use of the acid maceration method, which provides fast and reliable estimates of whole kidney nephron number, is demonstrated.

A novel technique to create a reproducible in vivo model of cervical spinal cord laceration injury in the mouse is described. This technique is based on spine stabilization by fixation of the cervical facets and laceration of the spinal cord using an oscillating blade with an accuracy of ±0.01 mm.

A Mouse Model of Single and Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Athletes absorb several hundred mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI)/concussions every year; however, the consequence of these on the brain is poorly understood. Therefore, an animal model of single and repetitive mTBI that consistently replicates clinically relevant symptoms provides the means to advance the study of mTBI and concussion.
