Stirred Suspension

Stirred suspension is a cell-culture method in which cells or multicellular aggregates grow freely in liquid medium rather than attaching to a solid surface. Continuous agitation keeps the culture suspended, promotes even distribution of nutrients and oxygen, and influences aggregate size through fluid movement and shear forces. In developmental biology, this approach supports the production and maintenance of embryoid bodies, organoid-forming aggregates, and other three-dimensional cell systems used to study differentiation, tissue organization, and morphogenesis. Controlling stirring conditions can improve culture uniformity while also revealing how physical forces and environmental conditions affect development.

2017

This video and manuscript describe an emulsion-based method to encapsulate mammalian cells in 0.5% to 10% alginate beads which can be produced in large batches using a simple stirred vessel. The encapsulated cells can be cultured in vitro or transplanted for cellular therapy applications.

Power Input Measurements in Stirred Bioreactors at Laboratory Scale

2018

The power input in stirred bioreactors can be measured through the torque that acts on the impeller shaft during rotation. This manuscript describes how an air bearing can be used to effectively reduce friction losses observed in mechanical seals and improve the accuracy of power input measurements in small-scale vessels.

ECM Suspension Preparation: A Technique to Obtain Homogenous Suspension from Tissue-derived Extracellular Matrix

Children at play often make suspensions such as mixtures of mud and water, flour and water, or a suspension of solid pigments in water known as tempera paint. These suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures composed of relatively large particles visible to the naked eye or seen with a magnifying glass. They are cloudy, and the suspended particles settle out after mixing. The suspended particles in a suspension settle out after some time of mixing. The separation of particles from a suspension is...
