Adaptive Optics

Adaptive optics is a wavefront-control technology that improves the quality of optical images or beams by correcting distortions introduced by a medium or optical system. It works by measuring wavefront errors with a sensor, calculating corrective commands in a control loop, and reshaping a deformable mirror or other optical element to compensate for those errors in real time. In engineering, adaptive optics supports high-resolution astronomy, laser beam delivery, microscopy, and vision research by reducing aberrations and sharpening measurements. Its integration with fast sensors, actuators, and computational algorithms continues to expand precision imaging and optical communication in changing environments.

2023

An optical density-based microplate method is described to quantify long-term bacterial growth in the presence of bacteriophages, suitable for actinomycetes and other slow-growing bacteria. This method includes modifications to reduce evaporation and lid condensation and R code to calculate virus infection metrics, including the area under the curve, growth maximum, and relative virulence.

Source: Jeong, H., et. al. Procedure for Adaptive Laboratory Evolution of Microorganisms Using a Chemostat. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates the selective isolation and growth of stress-adapted bacteria from a culture exposed to prolonged stress conditions. The culture is plated on stressor-containing agar, and a single colony is selected to inoculate a liquid medium with the stressor. Absorbance is measured at regular intervals to monitor the growth and confirm the successful...
