Alumina Interlayer

An alumina interlayer is a thin layer of aluminum oxide positioned between two materials to modify their interface and improve device or component performance. Because alumina is chemically stable, electrically insulating, and resistant to diffusion, it can separate reactive surfaces, limit interfacial reactions, and regulate the movement of atoms, ions, heat, or charge across a structure. Engineers use alumina interlayers in coatings, electronic devices, ceramic-metal assemblies, and thin-film systems to enhance adhesion, corrosion resistance, dielectric isolation, and thermal stability. Their thickness, uniformity, and deposition or oxidation conditions strongly influence interfacial reliability and overall performance.

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Surface area and pore size distribution are attributes used by adsorbent and catalyst manufacturers and users to ensure quality control and to determine when products are at the end of their useful lives. The surface area of a porous solid is directly related to its adsorption capacity or catalytic activity. The pore size distribution of an adsorbent or catalyst is...

2017

Here, we present a protocol for the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within the interlayer space of layered titanate films without the aggregation of AuNPs. No spectral change was observed even after 4 months. The synthesized material has expected applications in catalysis, photo-catalysis, and the development of cost-effective plasmonic devices.

Molecular beam epitaxy is used to grow N-polar InAlN-barrier high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs). Control of the wafer preparation, layer growth conditions and epitaxial structure results in smooth, compositionally homogeneous InAlN layers and HEMTs with mobility as high as 1,750 cm2/V∙sec.

Obtaining 3D Chemical Maps by Energy Filtered Transmission Electron Microscopy Tomography

2018

This paper describes a protocol to achieve 3D chemical maps combining energy filtered imaging and electron tomography. The chemical distribution of two catalyst supports formed by elements that are difficult to distinguish by other imaging techniques was studied. Each application consists of mapping overlapped chemical elements - respectively spaced-ionization edges.
