Fault Isolation

Fault isolation is the systematic process of locating the component, connection, or condition responsible for a failure in an engineered system. It works by observing symptoms, comparing system behavior with expected operation, and using diagnostic tests to partition the system into functional sections until the suspected fault is narrowed to a specific element. Engineers may apply signal tracing, continuity checks, fault trees, built-in test data, or controlled substitution, depending on the system and operating conditions. Effective fault isolation reduces repair time, limits unnecessary component replacement, and supports safer maintenance of electronic, mechanical, software, and complex integrated systems. It also improves reliability analysis and informs future design improvements.

Fault Types

When analyzing a single line-to-ground fault from phase A to ground at a three-phase bus, it is important to consider the fault impedance. This impedance is zero for a bolted fault, equal to the arc impedance for an arcing fault, and represents the total fault impedance for a transmission-line insulator flashover. To derive sequence and phase currents, fault conditions are translated from the phase domain to the sequence domain. For line-to-line faults occurring between phases B and C, the...

Design and Application of a Fault Detection Method Based on Adaptive Filters and Rotational Speed Estimation for an Electro-Hydrostatic Actuator

2022

In this paper, an adaptive filter based on a normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm and a rotational speed estimation method are introduced to detect the electrical and hydraulic faults of the electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA). The efficacy and feasibility of the aforementioned methods are verified through simulations and experiments.

We describe the isolation of cardiac extracellular matrix from C57Bl/6J control mice, tight-skin mice, and tight-skin mice treated with the IRF5 inhibitory peptide. We also describe the vasodilation studies on the isolated vessels from C57Bl/6J, tight-skin mice and tight-skin mice treated with the IRF5 inhibitory peptide.

Neutrophils are among the first cells to arrive on the site of inflammatory immune response, and their functions and mechanisms have been studied extensively in vitro. We demonstrate a standard density gradient separation method to isolate human neutrophils from whole blood using commercially available separation media.
