Film Inlet Forcing

Film inlet forcing is an engineering method that introduces controlled disturbances at the entrance of a flowing liquid film to investigate how the film responds. A forcing signal, such as a periodic variation in inlet flow rate or film thickness, generates surface waves that evolve through amplification, interaction, and downstream transport under the effects of gravity, viscosity, and surface tension. This approach helps researchers characterize flow stability, wave formation, and transition in thin-film systems. It is particularly useful for validating fluid-dynamics models and improving the design of coating, evaporation, absorption, cooling, and other processes that depend on liquid-film behavior.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

2025

The two-thermal annealing method enables the fabrication of thin films of type II semiconductor silicon clathrate. Post-synthesis treatments, including thermal pressing and reactive ion etching, were performed to improve the material properties. This approach provides an accessible pathway for fabricating tunable clathrate films suitable for next-generation electronic and photonic devices.

We present a method for microfluidic deposition of patterned genipin and fibronectin on PDMS substrates, allowing extended viability of vascular smooth muscle cell-dense tissues. This tissue fabrication method is combined with previous vascular muscular thin film technology to measure vascular contractility over disease-relevant time courses.
