Flow Dynamics

Flow dynamics is the study of how liquids, gases, and other fluids move and respond to forces, making it fundamental to engineering design and system performance. Fluid motion is governed by conservation of mass and momentum, while pressure gradients, viscosity, density, gravity, and boundary geometry determine velocity, turbulence, and energy loss. Engineers use flow dynamics to analyze pipelines, pumps, turbines, aircraft, vehicles, and microfluidic devices, often combining mathematical models with experiments or computational fluid dynamics. Understanding these principles helps predict transport behavior, improve efficiency, control instability, and design safer systems across mechanical, chemical, civil, and aerospace engineering.

2023

Source: Joseph C. Muskat, Vitaliy L. Rayz, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana The objective of this video is to describe recent advancements of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations based on patient- or animal-specific vasculature. Here, subject-based vessel segmentations were created, and, using a combination of open-source and commercial tools, a high-resolution numerical solution was determined within a flow model.

An efficient method to obtain highly purified viable meiotic fractions from mouse testis is described, which combines a refined cell dissociation protocol with fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS). This method takes advantage of differences in the DNA content and nuclear density of discrete meiotic fractions.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
