Generator Excitation Control

Generator excitation control is the regulation of magnetic field current in an electrical generator to maintain stable terminal voltage and manage reactive power. In a synchronous generator, an excitation system measures generator voltage, compares it with a reference value, and uses an automatic voltage regulator to adjust the rotor’s direct-current field supply; increasing excitation typically raises generated voltage and reactive power output. This control supports reliable power-system operation by improving voltage stability, power factor, and transient response during load changes or disturbances. Engineers use excitation controls in power plants and grid-connected machines to coordinate generator performance, limit operating stress, and enhance system stability.

Generator Voltage Control

Generator voltage control is crucial for maintaining the stable operation of synchronous generators and wind turbines. In older models, a DC generator driven by the rotor delivers DC power to the rotor's field winding, and the power is transferred through slip rings and brushes. In the latest models, static or brushless exciters are used. Static exciters rectify AC power from the generator terminals and then transfer the DC power directly to the rotor. Brushless exciters, on the other hand, use...

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
