Natural Fibers

Natural fibers are slender filamentous materials obtained from plants, animals, and some minerals, and they matter in engineering because their structure can provide strength, low density, and reduced reliance on synthetic reinforcements. In fiber-reinforced composites, applied loads transfer from the surrounding matrix through the fiber–matrix interface, while fiber orientation, length, moisture content, and processing conditions influence stiffness, strength, and durability. Engineers use fibers such as flax, hemp, jute, and cellulose in construction products, automotive components, packaging, and lightweight panels. Their performance and environmental advantages must be balanced against variability, water absorption, and susceptibility to heat and biological degradation.

2014

We present a novel method of manufacturing rigid and robust short natural fiber preforms using a papermaking process. Bacterial cellulose acts simultaneously as the binder for the loose fibers and provides rigidity to the fiber preforms. These preforms can be infused with a resin to produce truly green hierarchical composites.

Nature and Nurture

2019

Many human characteristics, like height, are shaped by both nature—in other words, by our genes—and by nurture, or our environment. For example, chronic stress during childhood inhibits the production of growth hormones and consequently reduces bone growth and height. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of variation in height is due to genetic differences among individuals, and 10-30% of variation in height is due to differences in the environments that individuals experience, such as differences...

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.
