Building Structures

Building structures are engineered systems that support, enclose, and protect spaces while transferring loads safely to the ground. Their performance depends on how structural elements, such as beams, columns, slabs, walls, and foundations, work together under gravity, wind, seismic forces, and other applied stresses; engineers analyze equilibrium, strength, stiffness, and stability to select suitable materials and dimensions. In practice, structural design integrates architecture, construction methods, and building codes to create durable and efficient homes, workplaces, bridges, and public facilities. Understanding these principles helps engineers assess safety, control costs, improve resilience, and develop structures that meet changing environmental and societal needs.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...

How to Build a Dichoptic Presentation System That Includes an Eye Tracker

We recently proposed a method that allows dichoptic visual stimulus presentation and binocular eye tracking simultaneously1. The key is the combination of an infrared eye tracker and the corresponding infrared-transparent mirrors. This manuscript provides an in depth protocol for initial setup and everyday operation.

Building Three-Dimensional Neuronal Networks Coupled to Micro-Electrode Arrays

2025

This video demonstrates the development of a 3D neuronal culture coupled to a planar microelectrode array with hippocampal neurons. The isolated neurons form a 2D network on the microelectrode array's active area and adhere to glass microbeads in a multi-well plate with a membrane insert. Upon transferring these neuron-coated microbeads to the electrode, they organize into an interconnected 3D neural network.

We demonstrate the utility of nest building behavior in laboratory mice as an indicator of welfare. Nest scoring is a sensitive technique that is altered by temperature, illness, and aggression. The time to integrate into nest test (TINT) is a simple cage-side assessment that can detect postoperative pain.
