Three-dimensional Needle Tracking

Three-dimensional needle tracking is an engineering technique for estimating a needle’s position and orientation within a three-dimensional coordinate system, supporting accurate control of its movement. The process combines measurements from imaging systems, optical or electromagnetic sensors, or visual features with coordinate transformation and pose-estimation algorithms to reconstruct the needle’s spatial trajectory in real time. In medical engineering, this information can guide needle insertion, monitor alignment with a target, and support robotic or image-guided procedures. The same principles also aid instrument calibration, motion analysis, and development of safer, more precise minimally invasive technologies.

We have developed a video-rate tracking microscope system that can record and quantify C. elegans behavior at high resolution and high speeds. We have also developed computational methods to reduce the dimensionality of the worm images to a fundamental set of measurements that completely describe the shape of the worm.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...
