Water Surface Raising Loop

A Water Surface Raising Loop is a hydraulic engineering configuration or feedback process in which changes in water-surface elevation alter flow conditions and cause the surface to rise further. The mechanism depends on the interaction among pressure head, discharge, channel or conduit geometry, and flow resistance: an initial elevation change modifies the hydraulic gradient, redistributes flow, and can reinforce the elevation increase under suitable boundary conditions. Understanding this behavior helps engineers assess water-level control, transient flow, drainage performance, and the stability of hydraulic structures. Analysis of the loop can support safer designs and improved prediction of flooding, backwater effects, and system response.

Dissolved Oxygen in Surface Water

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements calculate the amount of gaseous oxygen dissolved in surface water, which is important to all oxygen-breathing life in river ecosystems, including fish species preferred for human consumption (e.g. bluegill and bass), as well as decomposer species critical to the recycling of biogeochemical materials in the system. The oxygen dissolved in lakes, rivers, and oceans is crucial for the...

This paper describes how three different water vortex regimes in a hyperbolic Schauberger funnel can be created, their most important characteristics, and how associated parameters such as the oxygen transfer rates can be calculated.

Turbidity and Total Solids in Surface Water

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Turbidity and total solids are related measurements addressing clarity of surface waters. Turbidity is an indirect measure of water clarity that determines the amount of light that can pass through the water. Total solids is a direct measurement of solid particles suspended in water determined by weight. High levels of turbidity and total solids are caused by soil erosion, waste discharge, runoff, or changes in...

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.
