Flowering Stage

The flowering stage is a plant’s reproductive phase, when it produces flowers that enable pollination, fertilization, and subsequent seed or fruit development. It begins when environmental and internal signals, especially photoperiod, temperature, and plant hormones, shift the shoot from vegetative growth to reproductive development. During this stage, flowers form specialized structures that produce and receive pollen, while resource allocation and environmental conditions influence flower formation, fertility, and maturation. Understanding the flowering stage helps researchers assess how light, temperature, water availability, and other environmental factors affect crop productivity, ecosystem reproduction, and plant responses to climate change.

Pollination and Flower Structure

2020

Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs. Flowers must be pollinated to produce seeds. In angiosperms, pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of the stamen (the male structure) to the stigma of the carpel (the female structure). Flowers may be self-pollinated or cross-pollinated.

Here, we present a protocol to force flowering in mandarin trees under phytotron conditions. Water stress, high illuminance and a simulated spring photoperiod allowed viable flowers to be obtained in a short period of time. This methodology allows researchers to have several flowering periods in 1 year.

In this protocol, we describe techniques for the proper dissection of Arabidopsis flowers and siliques, some basic clearing techniques, and selected staining procedures for whole-mount observations of reproductive structures.

Stages of Sleep

2024

Sleep progresses through distinct stages, each characterized by specific brain wave patterns and physiological responses ranging from wakefulness to stages of non-rapid eye movement, known as non-REM, to rapid eye movement, referred to as REM. Understanding these stages helps in recognizing how sleep supports various bodily and cognitive functions. Before sleep begins, in wakefulness, the brain exhibits primarily beta waves, which are high in frequency and low in amplitude, indicating alertness...
