Long-term Plankton Data

Long-term plankton data are sustained records of plankton abundance, diversity, distribution, and composition collected over extended periods to reveal how aquatic ecosystems change. Researchers build these time series through repeated sampling at consistent locations and intervals, using methods such as microscopy, automated imaging, or molecular identification to compare organisms across seasons and years. These records help distinguish short-term variability from persistent trends and link plankton communities to environmental conditions, including temperature, nutrient availability, and water quality. In environmental research, long-term plankton data support ecosystem monitoring, climate-change assessments, fisheries management, and early detection of ecological disruption.

Visualizing Oceanographic Data to Depict Long-term Changes in Phytoplankton

2023

Here, we present a protocol for converting phytoplankton microscopic images into vector graphics and repetitive patterns to enable visualization of shifts in phytoplankton taxa and biomass over 60 years. This protocol represents an approach that can be utilized for other plankton time series and datasets globally.

Concentration of Metabolites from Low-density Planktonic Communities for Environmental Metabolomics using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

A method for metabolite extraction from microbial planktonic communities is presented. Whole community sampling is achieved by filtration onto specially prepared filters. After lyophilization, aqueous-soluble metabolites are extracted. This approach allows for application of environmental metabolomics to trans-omics investigations of natural or experimental microbial communities.

Long-term Depression

2019

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. Calcium Ion Concentration Mechanism If over time, all...

In Vitro Calcium Imaging in Short-Term and Long-Term Rat Hippocampal Cultures

Source: Calvo-Rodríguez, et al. Fluorescence and Bioluminescence Imaging of Subcellular Ca2+ in Aged Hippocampal Neurons. J. Vis. Exp. (2015). This video demonstrates the use of fluorescence imaging to measure cytosolic calcium levels in short-term and long-term rat hippocampal cultures. By comparing young and aged neurons, it highlights how increased L-type voltage-gated calcium channel density and prolonged activation in aged neurons result in calcium overloading, a hallmark of neuronal aging.

C. elegans Positive Butanone Learning, Short-term, and Long-term Associative Memory Assays

Here we describe methods to test C. elegans associative learning and short- and long-term associative memory. These population assays employ the worms abilities to chemotax toward volatile odorants, and form positive associations upon pairing food with the chemoattractant butanone. Increasing the number of conditioning periods induces long-term memory.
