Laser Direct Infrared

Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) is an infrared spectroscopic imaging technique that rapidly identifies and maps chemical materials, making it valuable for environmental analysis. It directs tunable infrared laser light across a sample, measures wavelength-specific absorption caused by molecular vibrations, and compares the resulting spectral signatures with reference libraries to classify particles or compounds. In environmental research, LDIR supports the detection and characterization of microplastics, fibers, and other particulate contaminants in complex samples. Its combination of chemical specificity, automated particle analysis, and spatial information helps researchers assess pollution sources, transport, and ecological exposure while improving monitoring efficiency.

2015

We describe the generation of far-infrared radiation using an optically pumped molecular laser along with the measurement of their frequencies with heterodyne techniques. The experimental system and techniques are demonstrated using difluoromethane (CH2F2) as the laser medium whose results include three new laser emissions and eight measured laser frequencies.

Control of Cell Geometry through Infrared Laser Assisted Micropatterning

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of infrared (IR) spectroscopy (also known as vibrational spectroscopy) to elucidate the identity of an unknown compound by identifying the functional group(s) present. IR spectra will be obtained on an IR spectrometer using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) sampling technique with a neat sample of the unknown.

A mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) source operated at atmospheric pressure was developed by coupling mid-infrared laser desorption and electrospray post-ionization. Exogenous ice matrix was used as the energy-absorbing matrix to facilitate resonant desorption of tissue-related material. This manuscript provides a step-by-step protocol for performing IR-MALDESI MSI of whole-body neonatal mouse.
