Non-dispersive Infrared Sensors

Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensors are optical instruments that measure gas concentrations by detecting how molecules absorb infrared radiation, making them important tools for environmental monitoring. An infrared source sends light through a gas sample, and a detector measures attenuation within selected wavelength bands using optical filters rather than dispersing the light into a spectrum; the reduction in intensity relates to concentration through the Beer–Lambert principle. NDIR sensors commonly monitor carbon dioxide, methane, and other infrared-active gases in ambient air, emissions, and ventilation systems. Their selectivity, continuous operation, and relatively low maintenance support air-quality assessment, greenhouse-gas monitoring, and pollution-control applications.

Formulation of stable, functional inks is critical to expanding the applications of additive manufacturing. In turn, knowledge of the mechanisms of dispersant/particle bonding is required for effective ink formulation. Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) is presented as a simple, inexpensive way to gain insight into these mechanisms.

Distribution and Dispersion

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with their environment and with one another. An important aspect of ecology is understanding where species are found and how individuals are distributed within those areas. The geographic range of a species refers to the total area where its members are located, while dispersion describes the pattern of spacing of individuals within that range.Geographic Range and Dispersion PatternsWithin a species’ geographic range, individuals may be distributed...

2025

Here, we present a protocol to adapt the Taylor dispersion experiment to the microscale using microchannels fabricated in-house with a desktop craft cutter. The experimental platform can be used to compute the diffusion coefficient of single-species passive tracers and to visualize multispecies ion interaction and separation.

Detection of Biofilm Disassembly Through a Dispersion Assay

2025

The video showcases a biofilm dispersion assay using a multi-well plate. Buffer and glucose treatment disassemble the biofilm, releasing bacteria, while bile salts induce stress, retaining bacteria in the protective extracellular polymeric substance. Higher dispersion with buffer and glucose confirms successful biofilm disassembly, estimated by colony forming units measurement.
