Wetland Treatment Systems

Wetland treatment systems are engineered or managed wetlands that improve water quality by using natural physical, chemical, and biological processes, making them a sustainable approach to environmental pollution control. As water moves through shallow basins, porous substrates, vegetation, and microbial communities remove contaminants through sedimentation, filtration, adsorption, plant uptake, and microbial transformation of nutrients and organic matter. These systems treat municipal wastewater, agricultural runoff, industrial effluent, and stormwater while providing habitat and reducing pollutant loads entering rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. Their relatively low energy demands and adaptable design support decentralized treatment and nature-based infrastructure.

2025

Constructed wetland treatment systems have been used for decades to treat wastewater, but their application to treat oil sands process-affected waters is relatively new. To explore this potential, a surface flow mesocosm design and experimental methods are outlined. This approach aims to enhance our understanding of key design parameters and improve treatment efficacy.
