Gene Mapping Approaches

Gene mapping approaches are methods used to determine the relative or physical positions of genes and genetic markers on chromosomes, helping researchers connect genomic regions with inherited traits. Genetic linkage mapping tracks how frequently markers and traits are co-inherited, using recombination rates to estimate their distances, while physical mapping and DNA sequencing locate genes directly along the chromosome. These approaches support the identification of disease-associated variants, the study of inheritance patterns, genome assembly, and comparative genetics. Together, they provide a framework for linking genotype to phenotype and continue to guide research in human genetics, breeding, and precision medicine.

2009

Genetic Inducible Fate Mapping (GIFM) marks and tracks cells with fine spatial and temporal control in vivo and elucidates how cells from a specific genetic lineage contribute to developing and adult tissues. Demonstrated here are the techniques required to fate map E12.5 mouse embryos for epifluorescent and explant analysis.

Fate Mapping

2023

Fate mapping is a technique used to understand how embryonic cells divide, differentiate, and migrate during development. In classic fate mapping experiments, cells in different areas of an embryo are labeled with a chemical dye and then tracked to determine which tissues or structures they form. Technological improvements now allow for individual cells to be marked and traced throughout embryonic development and adulthood. This video reviews the concepts behind fate mapping, and then details a...

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy performed on thin organ and tumor tissue successfully detected natural elements and artificially injected gadolinium (Gd), issued from Gd-based nanoparticles. Images of chemical elements reached a resolution of 100 μm and quantitative sub-mM sensitivity. The compatibility of the setup with standard optical microscopy emphasizes its potential to provide multiple images of a same biological tissue.
