Aerosol Concentration Equilibrium

Aerosol concentration equilibrium is the condition in which the concentration of airborne particles remains relatively stable because particle generation is balanced by losses from ventilation, dilution, settling, and deposition. In an enclosed environment, the concentration rises when aerosols are released faster than they are removed and approaches a steady state when these opposing rates become equal. In immunology and infection research, this principle helps researchers estimate exposure to pathogen-containing aerosols, interpret airborne transmission experiments, and design controlled inhalation or sampling systems. Understanding equilibrium also supports evaluation of ventilation strategies and other measures that reduce persistent airborne concentrations.

Calculating Equilibrium Concentrations

2020

Being able to calculate equilibrium concentrations is essential to many areas of science and technology—for example, in the formulation and dosing of pharmaceutical products. After a drug is ingested or injected, it is typically involved in several chemical equilibria that affect its ultimate concentration in the body system of interest. Knowledge of the quantitative aspects of these equilibria is required to compute a dosage amount that will solicit the desired therapeutic effect. A more...

2026

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

A Technique to Generate and Deliver Drug Aerosols Directly to Mouse Lungs

2025

This video demonstrates the generation of drug aerosols and the targeted nose-only delivery of these aerosols to mice using an inhalation unit equipped with an aerosol generator. The mouse is restrained in a nose-only restrainer and connected to the inhalation unit, which delivers the drug directly into the mouse's nasal cavity. Subsequently, the drug passes through the trachea and enters the lungs.

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.
