Ards Mortality

ARDS mortality refers to deaths occurring among patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a life-threatening form of acute lung injury marked by severe hypoxemia and diffuse alveolar damage. Immune activation in response to infection, sepsis, or other insults can disrupt the alveolar-capillary barrier, allowing fluid and inflammatory cells to enter the lungs and impair gas exchange. Measuring ARDS mortality helps researchers evaluate disease severity, identify prognostic factors such as organ failure, and compare supportive strategies, including lung-protective ventilation and prone positioning, while guiding immunological research and critical-care decision-making.

Lavage-induced Surfactant Depletion in Pigs As a Model of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.

The Application of Point-of-Care Ultrasonography (POCUS) in the Management of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in the Intensive Care Unit

Here, we present a protocol for bedside POCUS application in ARDS management within the ICU. It details standardized techniques for lung, cardiac, diaphragm, venous, and gastric assessments to guide ventilation, predict weaning, and prevent complications.

Assessing Pathogenic Bacteria–Induced Mortality in C. elegans Larvae

Source: Anderson, Q. L., et al. A High-throughput, High-content, Liquid-based C. elegans Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a liquid-based assay where genetically modified C. elegans larvae are exposed to pathogenic bacteria in a microplate. Bacterial toxins secreted into the medium induce host stress and death. A fluorescent dye stains dead worms, allowing imaging-based quantification of mortality to assess genetic susceptibility or resistance.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

2025

This video demonstrates a blood-feeding assay to evaluate the mortality and fecundity of test compounds with novel modes of action on female mosquitoes. This technique helps in screening new classes of insecticides to kill the resistant population of mosquitoes and control disease spread.
