Perivascular Cell Accumulation

Perivascular cell accumulation is the concentration of immune or stromal cells around blood vessels, a spatial pattern that can indicate local inflammation, tissue injury, or vascular remodeling. During infection, inflammatory signals activate endothelial cells, increase vascular permeability, and induce chemokines and adhesion molecules that guide circulating leukocytes through the vessel wall into perivascular tissue. Characterizing this accumulation helps researchers distinguish immune-cell recruitment from broader tissue changes and assess how pathogens, host defenses, or therapies affect the vascular niche. In immunology and infection research, perivascular cell distribution can therefore provide insights into disease progression, tissue-specific immune responses, and potential therapeutic targets.

2012

Human perivascular stem cells (PSCs) are a novel stem cell class for skeletal tissue regeneration similar to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). PSCs can be isolated by FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting) from adipose tissue procured during standard liposuction procedures, then combined with an osteoinductive scaffold to achieve bone formation in vivo.

Human cardiac tissue harbours multipotent perivascular precursor cell populations that may be suitable for myocardial regeneration. The technique described here allows for the simultaneous isolation and purification of two multipotent stromal cell populations associated with native blood vessels, i.e. CD146+CD34- pericytes and CD34+CD146- adventitial cells, from the human myocardium.

Here we report a method for isolation of Adipocyte Progenitor Cell (APC) populations from Perivascular Adipose Tissue (PVAT) using Magnetic-activated Cell Sorting (MCS). This method allows for an increased isolation of APC per gram of adipose tissue when compared to Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS).

An Assay to Measure the Accumulation of a Fluorescent Antibiotic Probe in Bacterial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to measure the accumulation of a fluorescent antibiotic probe in bacterial cells. Exposure to an efflux pump inhibitor disrupts the transmembrane proton gradient in bacterial cells, upon which a fluorophore-conjugated antibiotic is added. Inhibition of efflux pumps due to the disrupted proton gradient causes accumulation of the antibiotic inside the bacteria. Bacterial cells are lysed, and the fluorescence intensity is measured to confirm antibiotic accumulation.
