Salmonella Shigella Screening

Salmonella Shigella screening is a microbiological approach for detecting suspected Salmonella and Shigella organisms, important causes of bacterial gastroenteritis and enteric infection, in clinical specimens. In a typical workflow, a sample is inoculated onto selective and differential media that suppress much of the accompanying flora and reveal characteristic colony reactions, after which presumptive isolates undergo biochemical or serological confirmation. The method supports diagnosis, outbreak investigation, infection-control decisions, and public health surveillance by identifying enteric pathogens for targeted follow-up. Consistent screening also helps laboratories process specimens efficiently and monitor patterns of transmission.

(2017)This video demonstrates the infection of epithelial cells with the pathogenic bacterium Shigella flexneri and the resulting host cellular response. Bacterial effector proteins disrupt host translation, triggering the formation of membrane-less organelles called stress granules, which reflect the cell's adaptive response to infection.

2020

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is an isothermal nucleic acid amplification test (iNAAT) that has attracted broad interest in the pathogen detection field. Here, we present a multi-laboratory-validated Salmonella LAMP protocol as a rapid, reliable, and robust method for screening Salmonella in animal food and confirming presumptive Salmonella from culture isolation.
