Partial Sums

Partial sums are the successive totals formed by adding the terms of a sequence, providing a way to study how an infinite series accumulates and whether it approaches a finite value. For a sequence (a_n), the nth partial sum is S_n = a_1 + ... + a_n; examining the sequence of values S_1, S_2, S_3, and so on reveals convergence, divergence, oscillation, or the effect of truncating a series. In mathematics, partial sums support approximation, error estimation, and analysis of power and geometric series, while also connecting discrete sequences to limits, functions, and numerical methods.

Partial Sums and Series Convergence

An infinite series is formed by adding the terms of an infinite sequence. Although the addition continues without end, some infinite series approach a definite finite value. This idea is useful for modeling physical processes in which each successive action becomes smaller, such as the motion of a bouncing ball that rises to a fraction of its previous height after each bounce.Consider a ball dropped from a height of one meter. After the first drop, it rises to half of that height, or 0.5 meters.

Zero-Sum and Non-Zero-Sum Game

Within game theory, games can be categorized as zero-sum or non-zero-sum games, based on how gains and losses are distributed among players. In a zero-sum game, one player's gain equals another player's loss, meaning the total amount of resources or benefits remains constant. For example, in a bidding war for a contract, if one company wins, the other loses out entirely, reflecting the fixed outcome of zero-sum games. Non-zero-sum games differ because gains and losses are not perfectly...

Sums of Power

In definite integration, Riemann sums approximate the area under a curve by dividing it into subintervals and summing the areas of rectangles. When these approximations follow predictable numerical patterns, such as arithmetic or polynomial sequences, sum formulas offer a more efficient and accurate way to compute the result. In particular, the sum of consecutive integers, squares, and cubes plays an essential role in simplifying these calculations, especially when dealing with uniform...

Lump-Sum Transfers

Lump-sum transfers help redistribute wealth without altering people’s work or consumption choices. Unlike taxes or subsidies, which change behavior by making certain activities more or less costly, lump-sum transfers provide a fixed amount regardless of earnings, spending, or labor decisions. Because they do not distort incentives, they allow markets to allocate resources efficiently while addressing initial inequalities in wealth distribution. The Second Welfare Theorem suggests that society...

Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test

The Wilcoxon rank-sum test, also known as the Mann-Whitney U test, is a nonparametric test used to determine if there is a significant difference between the distributions of two independent samples. This test is designed specifically for two independent populations and has the following key requirements: The samples must be randomly drawn. The data should be ordinal or capable of being converted to an ordinal scale, allowing the values to be ordered and ranked. The null hypothesis is that...
