African American Hair Sampling

African American hair sampling is the standardized collection of scalp hair from Black patients or study participants for laboratory analysis of chemical exposures, drugs, hormones, or other biological markers. Because hair grows from follicles and can retain substances incorporated during growth, analysts typically cut a small proximal segment close to the scalp, document its length and location, and prepare it for chemical testing. Hair texture, curl pattern, pigmentation, and cosmetic treatments can influence collection, analyte deposition, and interpretation, making culturally and technically appropriate protocols important. In medicine, this approach supports exposure assessment, adherence studies, toxicology, and epidemiological research while offering a practical alternative to repeated blood or urine sampling.

Hair cortisol concentration analysis provides an alternative to traditional measures of cortisol; however, to collect hair samples from African Americans, scientists need to be culturally informed and competent. The purpose of this protocol is to demonstrate a culturally informed technique to collect hair samples for cortisol analysis from African Americans.

We present a noninvasive sampling approach to efficiently collect hair samples from elusive small mammals, as shown for the American pika. We demonstrate the utility of this method by extracting DNA from sampled hair and amplifying several types of molecular markers commonly used in studies of wildlife ecology and conservation.

The American bullfrog's (Rana catesbeiana) sacculus permits direct examination of hair-cell physiology. Here the dissection and preparation of the bullfrog's sacculus for biophysical studies is described. We show representative experiments from these hair cells, including the calculation of a bundle's force-displacement relation and measurement of its unforced motion.

Current methods of analyzing patients’ adherence to complex drug resistant-tuberculosis (DR-TB) regimens can be inaccurate and resource-intensive. Our method analyzes hair, an easily collected and stored matrix, for concentrations of 11 DR-TB medications. Using LC-MS/MS, we can determine sub-nanogram drug levels that can be utilized to better understand drug adherence.
