Blood Plasma Processing

Blood plasma processing is the collection, separation, treatment, and storage of the liquid component of blood for clinical use and biomedical research. During processing, centrifugation separates plasma from red and white blood cells and platelets, while filtration, pathogen reduction, freezing, and controlled thawing help preserve quality and safety; fractionation can further isolate proteins such as albumin, immunoglobulins, and clotting factors. In medicine, processed plasma supports transfusion care and provides therapeutic products for patients with bleeding disorders, immune deficiencies, or severe plasma-protein loss. Standardized processing and quality control improve product consistency, reduce contamination risks, and expand access to plasma-derived treatments.

Composition of Blood Plasma

2025

Blood plasma is a fluid that contains approximately 92% water and 8% solutes. The solutes include various types of proteins, which constitute about 7% of the total solutes in the plasma. The high-molecular-weight proteins—albumins, globulins, and fibrinogen—are essential to plasma function. Albumins, making up about 60% of the plasma proteins, maintain the osmotic balance within blood vessels by preventing excessive water leakage. Additionally, albumins serve as carrier proteins, binding to...
