Bronchial Brushing

Bronchial brushing is a bronchoscopy-based sampling technique that collects cells from the lining of the airways, helping clinicians investigate abnormal respiratory findings. During the procedure, a brush passed through a bronchoscope is guided to a suspicious bronchial area and gently rotated or swept across the mucosa; the recovered material is then examined by cytology or other laboratory tests. The method can support evaluation of suspected lung cancer, infections, and other bronchial disorders, particularly when imaging identifies an endobronchial lesion but tissue biopsy is difficult. Results contribute to diagnosis and can guide decisions about further testing or treatment.

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.

Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and disease.

Impact Assessment of Repeated Exposure of Organotypic 3D Bronchial and Nasal Tissue Culture Models to Whole Cigarette Smoke

The aim of this protocol is to expose human organotypic 3D bronchial and nasal tissue models to mainstream cigarette smoke (CS) at the air-liquid interface. The impact of CS on the tissues is then investigated using a cytochrome P450 activity assay, a cilia beating measurement, and a systems biology approach.

The Bronchial Tree

2025

The human bronchi and bronchial tree play a crucial role in the respiratory system, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Let's delve into the intricate structure and functions of these respiratory components. The trachea, commonly known as the windpipe, is a tube that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi. At a point called the carina, it bifurcates into two primary bronchi. The right primary bronchus is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left primary...

The methodology to perform friction force microscopy experiments for contacting brushes is presented: Two polymer brushes that are grafted from (a) substrates and (b) colloidal probes are slid to show that, by using two contacting immiscible brush systems, friction in sliding contacts is reduced compared to miscible brush systems.
